Job Title : PM1 Superintendent

Reports to : Paper Production Manager

The Position

We currently have an opening for a PM1 Superintendent based out of our location in Port Townsend, Washington. This position will have the opportunity to demonstrate ownership and lead initiatives designed to drive continuous and step-change improvement in our Paper Machines department. This position is responsible for creating a strong safety culture and work environment, executing, and continuously improving the quality, productivity, efficiency, and cost of the operation. The PM1 Superintendent must be a strong leader with a knowledge of the paper-making process, paper machines, supporting equipment, and paper-making skills.

The Port Townsend Paper ("PTPC") mill is proud to have been in continuous operation for more than 90 years. We use a blend of virgin and recycled fibers (Kraft and OCC pulp) to produce Kraft pulp, paper, containerboard, medium and market pulp. Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates safety as a core value and establishes a safe working environment by actively leading the safe execution of work and in identifying/eliminating hazards.
  • Participates in department and mill initiatives for improving safety.
  • Provides leadership to machine personnel to ensure overall safe operations.
  • Identifies developmental needs and facilitates training of machine personnel.
  • Plans and controls production performance.
  • Monitors compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures quality systems are in place and comply with customer specifications.
  • Coordinates efforts with maintenance and technical departments.
  • Creates an environment of respect, trust, accountability, and excellence.
  • Empowers and engages co-workers to improve our performance and lower costs.
  • Tracks and maintains consumable equipment wear to measure cost and efficiency.
  • Develops and executes strategic plans to increase overall machine efficiency.
  • Tracks and improves quality and customer relations.
  • Reduces waste from off-specification production and/or losses.

Strategy and Development
  • Contributes to the creation and implementation of best practices in line with the Paper Machine vision, strategy policies, processes, and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.
  • Contributes to new business initiatives and projects and reviews and communicates the impact on Paper Machine activities.

Interpersonal/Work Relationship Skills
  • Works with all levels in the department from direct supervision of operators to Paper Production Manager but also works with all levels outside the department from operators/maintenance personnel up through the General Manager.
  • Administers labor agreement and works with Human Resources and Union representatives.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Paper Science, or related field with five plus year's operations experience within the paper industry including two-plus year's supervisory experience.
  • Candidates with ten-plus years' of progressive and practical paper-making experience including five-plus years' of paper machine supervisory experience will be considered.
Required Experience
  • Experience working in a team environment with a union contract.
Work Environment
  • This job operates in a production environment.
  • The employee is exposed to shop elements such as noise, dust, fumes, and odors.

Physical Requirements
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, climb and/or balance, to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, enter confined spaces, scale heights, is exposed to extreme temperatures, and needs to have the ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Employment Terms
  • Full-time, Exempt position, with overtime as required.
  • Salary range: $155,000 to $190,000 DOE.
  • 4 weeks paid vacation.
  • Full-time employees receive 160 hours of sick leave upon hire then earn eight hours of sick leave per month.
  • 9 paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
  • Retirement plan.

  • In compliance with the Immigration and Naturalization Act, proof of authorization to work in the United States will be required at the time of hire.
