Job Description

This position calls for a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to provide direct support to an 11th-grade student with visual impairments in Fremont, CA. The role involves delivering 150 minutes per month of in-person O&M services under a contract for the current school year.

The students visual challenges include Retinopathy of Prematurity, Nystagmus, High Myopic Astigmatism, and Optic Nerve Pallor. These conditions impact distance vision and cause eye fatigue, necessitating accommodations such as visual breaks and enlarged text. The students access to the Expanded Core Curriculum is affected, particularly in areas like social interaction, independent living skills, and orientation and mobility.

Key responsibilities for the OMS include:

• Providing make-up services to cover missed minutes since August
• Implementing individualized O&M goals with close attention to safety and skill mastery
• Teaching safe intersection and street crossing skills aiming for 90% accuracy over multiple trials
• Coaching appropriate cane techniques, especially on stairs, targeting consistent accuracy
• Guiding the student in utilizing internet tools and apps to plan and navigate routes in new locations with monitored safety and strong success rates

Qualifications and desired experience:

• Certification or licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist
• Experience working with students who have visual impairments, including complex ocular diagnoses
• Strong ability to assess functional vision and tailor mobility instruction accordingly
• Familiarity with assistive technology and route planning applications
• Commitment to fostering independence while ensuring safety in community mobility
