Reporting to the Lowe Art Museum's Director and Chief Curator and working closely with the museum's entire Collections & Exhibitions Services ("C&E") team, the Assistant Curator supports the Chief Curator as well as guest and consulting curators through all aspects of the co-ordination and realization of permanent collection and temporary exhibitions as well as related programs, events, outreach. They will also assist with the care and curation of the museum's extensive permanent collection, conduct original scholarly research, ensure the Lowe maintains the highest possible professional standards, and advance the institution's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Belonging.
CORE DUTIES
- Supports the research and development of exhibitions, commissions, publications, and related programs, as directed by Chief Curator.
- Collaborates with the Chief Curator on the identification, planning, and management of future exhibitions and gallery rotations at the Lowe.
- Works closely with the Chief Curator, Lowe Office Manager, and other C&E team members to set and maintain exhibition- and collection-related production schedules and budgets.
- Liaises with lenders, artists, designers, partner institutions, and other collaborators for exhibitions and commissions as required by the Chief Curator, maintaining excellent relations throughout.
- Works closely with the Chief Curator as well as guest and consulting curators in the design and layout of exhibitions, liaising with internal parties and/or external vendors as required.
- Develops, organizes, and oversees workflows required to produce didactics, exhibition catalogs, etc.
- Writes, edits, and prepares exhibition labels and interpretative texts for specific exhibitions as required; co-ordinates production of these graphic elements with internal units and/or external vendors as required.
- Prepares and compiles materials for catalogues, including writing, editing, and proof reading, as well as liaising with graphic designers and publishers as required.
- Researches and procures high resolution images of artworks (and related materials) for reference, insurance, and catalogue purposes, ensuring costs remain within budget allocation.
- Secures image and copyright permissions for all photographs used for publications, graphics, and communications purposes, as necessary.
- Liaises with the Lowe's Communications Specialist and external press, ensuring that they have all relevant information from C&E.
- Liaises with the Lowe's Technology & Engagement Team on the planning and execution of public programs centered on Lowe exhibitions and displays.
Collections Care & Development
- Assists the Chief Curator with the curation and oversight of an extensive permanent collection, consisting of over 19,500 objects dating from classical times to the 21st century.
- Collaborates with the Chief Curator and Lowe's Collections & Exhibitions team to ensure the highest museum standards are maintained in the galleries as well as in storage areas, both on- and off-site.
- Researches potential loans and acquisitions for the museum, preparing curatorial reports as required.
- Collaborates with the Chief Curator and
Registrar on the management of short and long-term
loans to and from the museum.
- Liaises with Lowe Department of Technology & Engagement as well as UM IT to ensure adequate representation of the collection online.
- Assists the Chief Curator and Lowe's C&E team with updating and maintaining collections-related policies, plans, and procedures as well as with all matters related to AAM accreditation.
- Serves as lead on documenting (in collaboration with relevant members of the Lowe's team) all temporary exhibitions at the museum, including research materials, final budget/expenditure, floorplan/layout, installation shots, press coverage, and visitor statistics and feedback.
Research
- Conducts research related to Lowe exhibitions as well as the museum's permanent collection.
- Assists students, researchers, and members of the public with collections-related inquiries.
- Develops and delivers collections- and exhibitions-related public talks, tours, and lectures.
- Liaises with the Lowe's Technology & Engagement team in the planning and delivery of educational activities as required.
Other
- Works to develop, document, and follow budgets.
- Prepares requisition orders and invoices, as directed by the Chief Curator and/or Lowe Office Manager.
- Plays an active role in the Lowe's fundraising initiatives and activities, including donor cultivation and stewardship as well as identifying, preparing, and submitting grant applications for funding support.
- Serves as an advocate for the museum with stakeholders, contributing to audience development.
- Selects, mentors, and line manages student interns as required.
- Administrative and other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA required; MA in Art History or PhD preferred (comparable experience will be considered).
- Four years of experience with an art museum or gallery; five years of experience preferred. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Extensive experience with all aspects of the development and implementation of temporary art exhibitions and with permanent collections at an art museum and/or gallery.
- Must be proactive, highly organized, detailed oriented, and able to manage multiple concurrent projects within an ever-changing environment.
- Ability to evaluate priorities and work well under pressure.
- Excellent time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Maturity and discretion are essential as is a commitment to working as a team in support of the Lowe's mission and vision.
- Ability identify and connect with relevant community stakeholders with a view to expanding the Lowe's reach in our community.
- Experience with collections databases (TMS a plus).
- Excellent computer skills with competence in Word, Excel, and Outlook necessary.
