Job Description

Kelly Science & Clinical is seeking a R&D Chemist near Toledo, OH.

Direct Hire

Shift: Monday – Friday 8am- 4:30pm

Compensation:

Level II $60,000 - $75,000/year

Level III- $75,000 - $90,000/year

Summary:

This position involves conducting research, formulation, and experimentation for new product development and process improvement, particularly within the coatings industry, which may include floor, paint, or automotive applications. The role requires collaboration with marketing teams to guide products from conceptualization through field testing and launch. The ideal candidate will have experience in formulating products to meet current green standards, including Green Seal, Ecologo, Safer Choice, and USDA Bio-preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop new products, test methods, or procedures within tight timelines.
  • Modify existing formulations to enhance performance, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and manufacturability.
  • Support cost-saving measures, including reformulation and batch mixing improvements.
  • Integrate new technologies through vendor interactions, trade journals, and seminars.
  • Act independently, while providing increasing levels of project leadership.
  • Offer recommendations to Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and manufacturing teams concerning test procedures, batch corrections, and development processes.
  • Provide technical support to company personnel, distributors, end-users, government officials, and medical personnel.
  • Review technical literature, labels, and MSDS documents for accuracy.
  • Qualify and approve new and alternative raw materials.
  • Participate in training seminars and cross-departmental meetings.
  • Conduct necessary field testing.
  • Collaborate with various departments such as Marketing, Quality Control, Regulatory, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Production to complete projects.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including FDA, CARB, GHS, and EPA.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical area, preferably Chemistry or Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in running quality control validations on raw materials and manufactured products.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in wet chemistry testing, including titrations, pH determinations, foam testing, solids determinations, and refractometer readings.
  • Skilled in using specialized analytical equipment such as Viscometer, FTIR, Flash Point tester, and centrifuge.
  • Ability to conduct experiments using scientific methods and maintain accurate lab records.
  • Effective team collaboration and leadership skills, capable of directing the activities of others.
  • Ability to troubleshoot product issues and provide hands-on assistance.
  • Perform cleaning and validation tasks associated with industrial and institutional cleaning processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Availability to work non-traditional hours and overtime as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of performing fieldwork when necessary.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment.
