Position Profile

Fuller Theological Seminary invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Church History to begin July 1, 2026. Specialization and geographic focus are open, but expertise in either African American Church History, Latin American Church History, or Global Church History is preferred. The seminary is especially interested in scholars whose teaching and research relate marginalized histories to the wider world.

The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and the formation of students for ministry within and beyond the church. Teaching responsibilities include core and elective Master’s courses in Church History within the seminary curriculum and a capacity to advise research students at the PhD and DMin level. Candidates should expect to teach courses in global church history that span from the Patristic period to modernity. Teaching modalities include in-person, online, hybrid, and intensive course formats. Must be able to teach historiography and historical methods.

Position Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Quarter system full load per academic year in traditional and online modalities. Use of the seminary’s designated online course management system (Canvas) is required. Participate in curriculum revision, development, and review, as needed.
  • Scholarship: Maintain an active research program that attends to the ways in which church history informs and cultivates a prophetic voice in students and the ways one’s research contributes to preparing Christian leaders and aligns with the School of Mission and Theology commitment to the missional legacy of the seminary.
  • Service: Active involvement in the School of Mission and Theology, broader seminary, and academic guild is expected as part of your role as a faculty member.
  • Professional Development: Participate in professional development workshops and be actively engaged in disciplinary guilds.
  • Advise and Mentor Students: Participate in the academic advising of graduate students. Mentor students in research. Hold regular office hours. Complete related administrative responsibilities.
  • Faith: Actively participate in the life of the church. Integrate faith formation in teaching.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Church History, History of Christianity, Historical Theology or related fields. ABD candidates will be considered, if the degree is completed by August 2025.
  • Excellence in graduate-level teaching with an ability to lead students in exploring both theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline.
  • Competence and vision for teaching a diverse student body. The ability to speak and teach in Spanish is desirable.
  • Proficiency in the use of classroom technology.
  • Experience in the life and ministry of the church.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in scholarly research.
  • Position will be based primarily in Pasadena but serving the seminary broadly in its digital forward transformation of global impact.

Pay Scale:

  • Salary range the seminary expects to pay: $70,000 - $85,000 annually, USD
